Ladywell Shrine

The FMDM statue of Our Lady as mother was erected over the site of a 7th Century Minster Church. This church was dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary and was the first church ever built in Godalming

The word Minster refers to a Mother Church. The name Minster Field 'Oldmynstrefelde' is given on a map dated 1441 and an annual fair was held there on Lady Day up until 1540, but this practice deteriorated after the reformation.

In 1957 it seemed fitting to erect the present shrine, in order to perpetuate the memory of the years of worship of God and devotion to Mary offered in this hallowed place by the people of Godalming in bygone days.
