Malaysia and Singapore
In the summer of 1947, three FMDMs left England heading to Anlu, in the Sui-hsien Province of China.
They had been commissioned to work with the Irish Friars Minor in their Franciscan Missionary outreach. As it turned out, events in China caused them to be marooned in Hong Kong where they found refuge with the Maryknoll Sisters whose kindness they endeavoured to repay by helping in their hospital.
At that time they heard that Bishop OlComendy of Malacca was looking for Sisters to care for patients in Singapore suffering from tuberculosis, a disease that was still ravaging the island in the wake of the recent occupation during the World War II.
So it came about that on March 7th 1949, the first FMDM, Sister Angela McBrien, arrived in Singapore from Hong Kong, followed later by other sisters. In January 1951, our first Asian sister, Sister Tarcisius Leong entered to be followed over the years by many more sisters from both Singapore and Malaysia. These sisters are now missioned all over the Congregation bringing the richness of their cultural and faith tradition to each of the fmdm regions around the world.
Today we have 3 communities in Singapore and 5 in Malaysia where the sisters are involved in a variety of ministries but still with a strong emphasis on health care. We run a hospital and a hospice in Singapore and a cancer treatment hospital in Penang, Malaysia. We also coordinate a project for poor families and children in Port Klang.
