Nigeria
We were invited to go to Nigeria by the Augustinian Fathers and in 1950 four sisters set sail. After a three week journey they landed in Lagos and made their way to Yola, Northern Nigeria, where our first Nigerian community was established. The sisters worked in the local hospital and in the mission school. This community still thrives today with sisters involved in teaching, pastoral work, health care and prison ministry.
Our second community was established in 1968 in Yakoko, Taraba State. In Yakoko we run, on behalf of the diocese, St Monica’s Health Centre – a thriving 70 bed clinic with outreach programmes to the more remote communities for primary health care and home-based care for those with HIV/AIDS. St Francis Polio Centre serving the needs of children with polio by coordinating corrective surgery and offering skill development enabling the young people to take their place in society and enable them to generate some income for themselves.
Our third community is in Jos, Plateau State. Here, where the climate is much less severe the community offers hospitality to many and is also the formation and administrative centre for the Nigerian Region. The community has many outreach projects to meet the needs of the poor especially young women, families, and those in prison.
